With the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico approaching, most spots have already been claimed, but six places remain up for grabs. These final slots will be decided through playoff matches scheduled for March 2026.

European Playoffs – Four Places Up for Grabs

In Europe, 16 teams that did not qualify directly will compete in playoff paths for the last four World Cup spots. This group includes runners‑up from the UEFA qualifying groups and additional teams that performed well in the UEFA Nations League.

Some of the teams still in contention through the European playoffs include:

  • Italy
  • Denmark
  • Turkey
  • Ukraine
  • Bosnia & Herzegovina
  • Czech Republic
  • Republic of Ireland
  • Slovakia
  • Kosovo
  • Wales
  • Poland
  • Albania
  • North Macedonia
  • Romania
  • Sweden

These 16 nations are divided into four separate playoff paths, each consisting of semi-finals and a final. The winner of each path earns a spot at the World Cup.

Inter-Confederation Playoffs – Two Final Spots

Outside Europe, the remaining two World Cup berths will be decided through inter‑confederation playoffs. This mini tournament features six teams representing different continents, including:

  • CONCACAF (North, Central America, and the Caribbean)
  • CAF (Africa)
  • AFC (Asia)
  • CONMEBOL (South America)
  • OFC (Oceania)

Teams such as Jamaica, Suriname, Iraq, Bolivia, DR Congo, and New Caledonia are among those still vying for these last two slots.

Playoff Dates

European Playoffs: Semi-finals and finals will take place in March 2026, with knockout matches determining the four final qualifiers.

Inter-Confederation Playoffs: The six-team tournament will be held in Mexico, with matches on 26 and 31 March 2026 to decide the final two World Cup participants.

Why These Matches Are Crucial

These playoffs represent the last opportunity for nations to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Europe’s expanded format allows more teams a chance through knockout matches, while the inter-continental playoffs offer teams from different regions one final shot. Fans can expect high-stakes drama as the final lineup of 48 countries is confirmed ahead of the tournament kickoff in June 2026.
