FC Barcelona have secured the signing of promising 16 year old winger Ajay Tavares from Norwich City, strengthening their commitment to youth development at the iconic La Masia academy.

Young Talent Joins La Masia

The club officially announced Tavares’ arrival on February 23, 2026. He will join Barcelona’s Juvenil A (U19) squad, starting a path that could eventually lead to the first team. Known for his versatility, Tavares can play on either wing and in forward positions.

Tavares has been part of Norwich City’s academy since under 12 level, quickly standing out for his skill and maturity. He featured regularly for Norwich’s under 18 team last season and even made a pre season first-team appearance at 15.

Transfer Details

Barcelona had been monitoring Tavares for several months before completing the transfer. Administrative approvals for the move were cleared with FIFA, allowing the young talent to join the Catalan side.

His Portuguese passport helped bypass certain post Brexit restrictions affecting young British players moving abroad.

International Experience

Tavares has represented England at under 15, under 16, and under 17 levels, impressing with his technical ability, speed, and tactical awareness. While other European clubs were also interested, Barcelona ultimately secured the highly-rated youngster.

Norwich City expressed pride in Tavares’ development, acknowledging their sadness at losing a top prospect but celebrating his step up to one of Europe’s premier academies.

Barcelona’s Plans

At Barcelona, Tavares will develop within the Juvenil A squad, with the potential to progress to Barcelona Atlètic and eventually the first team. The club’s strategy focuses on cultivating young talent to maintain its footballing philosophy while building a future generation of stars.
