Benfica manager Jose Mourinho criticized referee Sergio Guelho, describing him as having “no personality” following their 1-1 draw against Rio Ave on Tuesday night.
Although Mourinho’s team took the lead in the second half, they were equalized during injury time by their lower-ranked opponents.
After the match, the former Chelsea and Manchester United coach directed his frustration towards the officials.
Mourinho claimed that the referee significantly influenced the outcome, particularly by disallowing a goal at 0-0 that would have given Benfica an early advantage.
Mourinho told reporters: “We scored a goal. If this is the new football, when goals are ruled out because a small toe steps on another small toe, I don’t like this new football.
“But that’s the way it is so we have to accept it.
“We kept trying and finally got the goal, but we conceded when we can’t concede a goal. It’s tremendously unfair and an awful result for us. It was the game that Rio Ave wanted and which the referee allowed.”
About the referee Guelho, he added: “He has no personality.”
