France has equaled Argentina’s record for the most Ballon d’Or wins by a country, following Ousmane Dembele’s triumph in the 2025 edition of the prestigious award.
Dembele, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain, claimed the honor ahead of Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal during the ceremony held on Monday night in Paris.
Prior to Dembele’s victory, Argentina led the global tally with eight Ballon d’Or titles, all secured by their national team captain, Lionel Messi.
With this latest win, France has now drawn level with Argentina, also reaching a total of eight Ballon d’Or awards.
Unlike Argentina, France’s success comes from a broader pool of talent, with six different players contributing to their total among them are Michel Platini, Zinédine Zidane, Karim Benzema, and now Dembele.
Trailing closely behind are Germany, the Netherlands, and Portugal, each with seven Ballon d’Or wins to their name.
Countries with the highest number of Ballon d’Or wins after Dembele’s triumph:
Argentina – 8
France – 8
Germany – 7
Netherlands – 7
Portugal – 7 (including Cristiano Ronaldo’s five wins)
Italy – 5
Brazil – 5
England – 5
