Victor Osimhen, who plays as a striker for Galatasaray, allegedly declined to accompany the Super Eagles squad for their 2026 World Cup qualifier in South Africa last week.

Reports suggest that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had encouraged him to join the team to provide moral support ahead of the clash in Bloemfontein.

This information came to light during a broadcast by SuperSport host Charles Anazodo on Monday night.

Osimhen sustained an ankle injury during Nigeria’s narrow 1-0 win over Rwanda earlier in the international break and promptly returned to Turkey afterward.

Anazodo wrote on X: “A very reliable source today told me the @thenff officials pleaded with Osimhen to travel with the @NGSuperEagles to South Africa as a means of support despite his injury.

“He blatantly refused and chose to go back to his club.”

While he continues his recovery, there’s a chance the forward could be fit in time for Galatasaray’s Champions League fixture against Frankfurt later this week.
