Grimsby Town have been sanctioned for fielding an ineligible player during their Carabao Cup second-round clash against Manchester United.
The League Two side secured a dramatic 12-11 win on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regular time, knocking United out of the competition.
Following that memorable victory, the Mariners are set to face Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in the third round.
However, the EFL announced on Tuesday that Grimsby have been fined “£20,000 – of which £10,000 will be suspended until the end of Season 2025/26 – for having breached the Rules of the competition.”
Despite the infraction, there is no indication that Grimsby’s win over Manchester United will be nullified due to the registration error.
According to the statement, Grimsby “self-reported the breach upon discovery the day after the fixture had been completed.”
