Ex-Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley has strongly criticized Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte, branding him a “wet blanket” who “absolutely does nothing” on the pitch.

Ugarte was among the signings made during Erik ten Hag’s time at Old Trafford, joining the club alongside players like Antony and Joshua Zirkzee.

All three struggled to impress during Ten Hag’s two-season stint in charge.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville also voiced disapproval of Ugarte’s performances, commenting that he is “not a Manchester United player.”

The Uruguayan international arrived at the club from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2024, with the transfer fee reportedly around £50 million.

Despite featuring in approximately 45 matches for United last season, Ugarte failed to make a meaningful impact or display the quality expected at a club with Manchester United’s stature.

Burley, a former Scotland international, reiterated his stance, describing Ugarte as a “wet blanket.”

“Manuel Ugarte is just absolutely nothing,” he said on ESPN.

“He’s just like a wet blanket. Put him in with the kids and even the kids would be going, ‘who the hell is this guy? Seriously.”

In the first two Premier League games this season, the Uruguay international came on as second half substitute and was left on the bench against Burnley.
