South Africa’s head coach, Hugo Broos, has applauded his team for rising to the occasion against the Super Eagles.

Bafana Bafana and Nigeria played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw during their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying clash on matchday eight, held Tuesday night at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.

The visitors took the lead in the 25th minute when Nigerian captain William Troost-Ekong mistakenly turned the ball into his own net.

Nigeria responded just before the break, with Calvin Bassey heading in a well-placed cross from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

The Super Eagles dominated much of the second half in search of a winner, but South Africa’s defense held firm under pressure.

Following the match, Broos commended his squad for their resilience and for going toe-to-toe with the physical intensity of their opponents.

“It was a match like I expected, a physical match much harder from the opponent, it’s only in the second half when they tried to win the game with power football, but we did a very good game also,” the Belgian said after the game.
