In a dramatic display of defiance, Senegal’s national football team paraded the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy during a friendly match in Paris, even though the Confederation of African Football (CAF) had officially awarded the 2025 title to Morocco.

On March 28, 2026, ahead of their friendly against Peru at the Stade de France, Senegalese players, led by captain Kalidou Koulibaly, carried the AFCON trophy around the pitch in front of thousands of cheering fans. This act came shortly after CAF ruled that Senegal had forfeited the 2025 AFCON final following a protest walk-off during stoppage time against Morocco a decision that changed what had been a 1–0 extra-time victory into a 3–0 forfeit win for Morocco.

The CAF appeal board’s ruling, issued earlier in March, officially transferred the championship to Morocco. The decision was based on Senegal leaving the field in protest of a late penalty, which the governing body deemed a breach of competition rules. Senegal has since appealed the ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), insisting they remain the rightful champions.

Senegal’s on-field celebration at the Stade de France was widely seen as a symbolic protest against CAF’s decision. The players wore jerseys displaying two stars, representing their claimed AFCON victories in 2021 and 2025, and embraced the trophy as a sign of team unity. In the friendly match, Senegal also secured a 2–0 victory over Peru, with goals from Nicolas Jackson and Ismaila Sarr.

The incident has sparked debate across African football. Supporters of Senegal argue the CAF decision undermines fair play, while others emphasize that following official regulations is essential. The CAS appeal will ultimately determine whether Senegal’s claim to the title is upheld or overturned.

Despite the controversy, both Senegal and Morocco are now focusing on preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aiming to make a strong impression on the global stage.
