Borussia Dortmund midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka has officially decided to represent Austria at the senior international level, ending his involvement with England’s youth teams. The switch has been approved by FIFA, making the 22-year-old eligible for Austria ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

From England Youth Star to Austrian Prospect

Born in Vienna, Austria, Chukwuemeka moved to England during his childhood and progressed through the youth academies of Aston Villa and Chelsea. He represented England at every youth level from Under 17 to Under 20, even playing a key role in England’s Under 19 European Championship triumph in 2022.

Despite his extensive youth experience with England, Chukwuemeka never played for the senior team, leaving the door open to switch allegiance to his birth country. By choosing Austria, he increases his chances of regular international football sooner rather than later.

A Boost for Austria’s World Cup Campaign

Austria, managed by Ralf Rangnick, has qualified for the World Cup finals for the first time since 1998 and faces a challenging group alongside Argentina, Algeria, and Jordan. Chukwuemeka could feature in Austria’s squad in upcoming friendlies against Ghana and South Korea.

His switch coincides with fellow youngster Paul Wanner also opting to represent Austria after previously playing for Germany at youth level, strengthening Austria’s pool of young talent.

Impact on His Career

At Borussia Dortmund, Chukwuemeka has become an important player following his permanent transfer after a loan spell. Representing Austria gives him the chance to compete on football’s biggest stage while adding an international dimension to his growing club career.
