Liverpool manager Arne Slot pointed to Jeremie Frimpong’s late defensive lapse as a key factor in their 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace in Saturday’s Premier League encounter.
The Reds’ unbeaten run came to an end following a stoppage-time strike from Eddie Nketiah.
Palace were the stronger side early on and opened the scoring through Ismaïla Sarr.
Goalkeeper Alisson was instrumental in keeping Liverpool in the game with several crucial saves, and the visitors eventually equalized through Federico Chiesa.
However, the home side regained the lead from a long throw-in that Liverpool failed to clear effectively.
Frimpong, who replaced Ibrahima Konaté in the 74th minute, misjudged the ball’s flight after it was inadvertently flicked on by Curtis Jones. That moment allowed Nketiah the space he needed to fire past Alisson and seal the win for Palace.
“We can only blame ourselves for defending the way we did,” said Slot, before hinting at Frimpong’s mistake.
“One of our players ran out because he wanted to play a counter-attack, which was of no use because time was up, so it was only about defending.
“One player was too offensively minded in that moment, which led to them scoring the winner and us losing the game.”
