Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi scored twice as his team dominated New York City FC with a 4-0 victory on Wednesday night at Citi Field.
This win secured Inter Miami’s place in the 2025 Major League Soccer playoffs.
Messi has now netted five goals in just nine days for the club.
After his second-half brace, Messi had the chance to complete a hat-trick but instead chose to award a late penalty to teammate Luis Suarez.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has scored two or more goals in eight of Inter Miami’s last 12 matches.
He became only the fourth player in MLS history to score multiple goals in eight games during a single season.
Inter Miami’s next match is against Toronto FC on Saturday night, as Javier Mascherano’s side aims to clinch the 2025 Supporters’ Shield.
Currently, Miami sits third in the Eastern Conference with 55 points from 29 games, trailing leaders Philadelphia Union by two matches.
