Lydia Monyepao, CEO of the South African Football Association (SAFA), has confirmed that FIFA has officially contacted them regarding an ongoing investigation into the controversy surrounding Teboho Mokoena’s suspension.
FIFA has reached out to Bafana Bafana, requesting clarification on how Mokoena was allowed to feature in the match against Lesotho in March this year.
The midfielder was reportedly ineligible for the 2026 World Cup qualifier, having accumulated two yellow cards prior to the fixture.
Should the disciplinary probe go against South Africa, their 2-0 win could be overturned, potentially resulting in a 3-0 loss by default.
“We have received communication from FIFA about the investigation they have launched in terms of the Lesotho match that Teboho Mokoena was fielded, we received it yesterday,” Monyepao said via Idiski Times.
“So we’re preparing our response to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee which is ultimately required of us as an association…”
As the qualifying campaign nears its end, Nigeria currently sits third in Group C with 11 points, behind South Africa with 17 and Benin Republic with 14.
Both Benin and Nigeria are now closely monitoring FIFA’s decision, which could have major implications for the group standings.
