Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has claimed he was subjected to verbal abuse from a Liverpool supporter throughout the match during their 3-2 Champions League loss at Anfield on Wednesday night.

The Argentine coach received a red card following an altercation with a fan in the stands during the heated encounter.

Liverpool struck twice within the opening six minutes of the first half, with goals from Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah giving them an early advantage.

Atletico, however, staged a comeback and drew level in the 81st minute, thanks to a brace from Marcos Llorente.

Despite the comeback, Liverpool sealed the win with a late header by Virgil van Dijk, who connected with a cross from Dominik Szoboszlai.

Following the winning goal, a confrontation occurred between Simeone and a Liverpool supporter who was celebrating. Stewards intervened and pulled the manager away from the situation.

Prior to the incident, Simeone had reportedly raised concerns with match officials about a fan seated in the front row who had allegedly made offensive gestures, including giving him the middle finger.

After the game the manager was asked about the incident, he said, “They’ve been talking about being careful, but they’ve been insulting you from behind the bench the whole game and you can’t say anything because I’m the coach.

“My reaction to the insult isn’t justifiable, but you don’t know what it’s like to be insulted for 90 minutes non-stop.

“And of course, when the opponent has just scored, you turn around and they keep insulting you, and with the tension, what happens happens.”

Speaking about his conversation with the referee, Simeone said, “He told me he understood, but I hope Liverpool can improve and if they identify who did that, there will be consequences.

“There have been insults all game and then there was a gesture, but well, the one who has to stay calm is me and put up with everything, insults, gestures, because you’re in a position where it’s your turn.”
