Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim has explained the circumstances surrounding Andre Onana’s exit from the club.
Onana, who spent two seasons at Old Trafford, struggled to meet the expectations of supporters and faced heavy criticism, particularly for his role in the team’s disappointing 15th-place finish in the Premier League last season.
Initially signed from Inter Milan as a successor to long-time No.1 David De Gea, the Cameroonian goalkeeper failed to establish consistency between the posts.
Following limited appearances this season his only outing being in the Carabao Cup second-round loss to Grimsby Town Onana has now secured a season-long loan move to Turkish side Trabzonspor.
His departure clears the way for Turkish international Altay Bayındır to step in as United’s new first-choice goalkeeper.
Addressing the press ahead of the Red Devils’ meeting with Manchester City on Sunday, Amorim said: “Onana did great at Inter but as a club now we needed a change.
“Sometimes it’s hard to point why, the performance, the moment, the bad luck in some moments was hard on him.
“I wish André all the very best.”
