South Africa’s head coach, Hugo Broos, has expressed confidence that his team could secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a victory over Nigeria in their upcoming fixture.
Bafana Bafana moved a step closer to reaching the tournament after a convincing 3-0 win over Lesotho on Friday.
That result pushed South Africa to 16 points in their qualifying group, putting them nine points ahead of Nigeria, who are set to face Rwanda on Saturday.
A win against Eric Chelle’s side next week could see Broos’ team clinch a place at next year’s World Cup.
However, their qualification would also depend on both Benin Republic and Rwanda failing to pick up maximum points in their next matches.
“If God is with us, then we can maybe qualify for the World Cup by next Tuesday, and that stays as the target for us,” Broos tokd reporters.
“We are in a good situation, we have everything in our own hands, so it’s up to us to now finish it.”
