Manchester United boss, Ruben Amorim, has offered an explanation for leaving out Benjamin Sesko from the early penalty takers in their shock Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town.

The Premier League side suffered a dramatic 12-11 loss in the shootout against the League Two outfit on Wednesday, leading to an unexpected elimination from the competition.

Sesko, who cost the club approximately £66 million, only stepped up for a penalty around the 11th round of the shootout.

Former Aston Villa forward, Gabriel Agbonlahor, openly criticized the Slovenian forward, branding him a coward for not taking a penalty sooner.

Agbonlahor questioned why a striker of Sesko’s status would shy away from stepping up earlier in the shootout during such a disappointing loss to lower-league opposition.

“So he finished the [Grimsby] game with cramps, really in the limit. That’s why we protected Ben from the penalties,” explained Amorim.

United went on to secure their first victory of the season with a 3-2 result against Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday marking Amorim’s seventh win since taking charge in 2024.
