Former Aston Villa forward Gabriel Agbonlahor has criticized Manchester United’s new signing, Benjamin Šeško, labeling him a coward.

Agbonlahor’s comments come after Šeško opted not to take one of the earlier penalties during United’s shock Carabao Cup second-round exit against League Two side Grimsby Town on Wednesday night.

Despite having a chance during the penalty shootout, Šeško waited until the later stages before stepping up, in a game that ended 12-11 in favor of the lower-league team.

Ruben Amorim’s squad had initially taken a 2-0 lead but saw that advantage erased as Grimsby leveled the score, pushing the match to penalties, where the Premier League side ultimately fell short.

Fellow newcomer Matheus Cunha saw his attempt saved, while Bryan Mbeumo failed to convert his second effort during the shootout.

Agbonlahor expressed disappointment in Šeško’s hesitation, arguing that a striker of his profile should have shown leadership by stepping up earlier.

He told talkSPORT, “Your star striker was probably waiting for the Man United groundsman to turn up to Grimsby and take the penalty.

“He was 10th in line before the keeper. How can your star striker let all the defenders take a penalty before you, then he takes one and scores it? That shows to me that he’s a coward as well.”

Šeško made the move to Manchester United this summer from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in a deal reportedly worth £74 million.
