Fernabahce’s head coach, Jose Mourinho, has admitted that his side lost 1-0 to Benfica in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off on Wednesday because the Portuguese team outperformed them.
Mourinho witnessed his team’s exit from the Champions League as Benfica secured a place in the group stage with a narrow 1-0 aggregate victory, following a goalless draw in the opening leg last week.
As a result of the loss, Fernabahce will now continue their European campaign in the UEFA Europa League this season.
Speaking at his post-match interview after the game, Mourinho said, “It is a club that knows this type of game, and obviously there is sadness in not being able to do it, but for me, I am aware that we lost against a team that is better than us.
“We had chances, but then we were reduced to 10 men and the game was over. But I think overall, the better team went through.”
