Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has conceded that his side was outperformed as they crashed out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night following a defeat to Grimsby Town.
The Red Devils remain winless this season and went into the break trailing by two goals.
First-half strikes from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren put the League Two outfit in control, but Manchester United fought back through goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire to draw level.
However, Grimsby eventually sealed their place in the third round by edging a dramatic penalty shoot-out 12-11.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Amorim said: “I think the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch.
“The best players lose because one team can win against any group of players, and I think the team and the players spoke really loud today, so that’s it.
“We lost, the best team won.
“The way we started the game without any intensity, all the idea of the pressure, we were completely lost and that’s why I think they spoke really loud.”
